User Testing TPM Session 2

User Testing - TPM Session 2

In the next user testing session with the Senior Technical Production Manager for Deadline White House on MSNBC, Anthony Amador, we got feedback on our refined MVP prototype. The UI was iterated after we analyzed his opinions from the first user testing session and aligned it with Rob and Kevin’s vision.

For the second user testing with the TPM, we focused making sure the revised top down view we updated after talking to Rob and Kevin is good enough to replace the TPMs live shot sheet.

After we guided the him through the tasks in the prototype, we asked him to answer follow up questions and to rate their experience per task.

Summarized Notes

Liked

  • Paths Shortcut

    • Clicking a RS or phone line in the header opens up additional live shot details and highlights clicked path

  • From first discovery session huge improvement

    • “it can work… need to play around with actual software more”

  • Adding and managing paths

  • Flexibility to grab all, none, or single paths

Not Liked

  • Says header looks too cluttered

    • RS’s and IFBs deserve own fields -split up

  • Additional Details - arrow direction wrong

  • Header - Needs to pop more

    • Name of Guest

    • Location

    • RS

    • IFB

    • Window (not so much)

    • Hit Time

    • Ready-for-air especially

  • CleanUp button

    • Rather than cleanup, only scroll to current time

    • Only going to be looking at headers

Wants

  • Wants there to be save button to edit path days

    • GUI dynamic, but need to click save button to “route” changes and show on shared control room screen

  • Host Object

    • Just want one RS for head on camera & her IFB

    • Wants it to inherit studio object cameras and paths

  • "Guest On Set" Button

    • On Host/pinned object

    • Opens up new object with studio paths pre-populated since inherited, because if Guest in studio will be same cameras

  • Studio object that accounts for host & guest in same studio room

Wants (cont.)

  • Types of objects: Anchor(Host), Reporter, Guest object, Beauty Feeds (other)

  • Header to be designed for larger screen size

  • Wants prompt to confirm grab/take objects - safety

    • Will have to talk about it… can convince myself either way

  • Should Automatically Assigning Phone CR paths

    • If IFB-2 is assigned 95% of the time PL-2 will be assigned

  • Global path for phone lines

    • Media traffic won’t assign IFBs & PLs global path; TPMs do

  • “Transmission Notes” section that has all of the studio transmission info he needs to convey Media Traffic

    • REMs, Fiber Transmit, LTNs (transmits) - he tells that information to Media Traffic, and they officially plug in

    • Will auto populate with new back-end-point of iNews

Wants (cont.)

  • Wants more information on hover/click of global path…

    • Says global path is just the REM

    • Can click or hover on it & see full path including transmission OR

    • OR seperate transmission column - hover & see full long text string

  • “Technical Notes” text field for important exceptions, not transmission

    • Should have visual indicator in top down view if filled in

  • Need “Submit to Media Traffic” button

  • Wants $$ reports for how much they use per studio

    • Based on window how much studio costs

    • Build database tracking time & money spent for studio

  • Wants “Dial” button to automatically dial control room desk phone to studio contact

  • Ready-for-air should populate timeline view because producers are going to be looking for if their guest are ready for air

  • Wants keyboard shortcuts

Key Takeaways

  • Need to consider what happens to a grabbed state if someone edits the paths after it changed

  • It is important to make the full transmission info with the three endpoints info accessible

  • After every change, user needs to save changes to execute them

  • Studio object should get pinned to the top, and on set host and guest are mapped to that object

    • User will have to select which studio cameras are on each host or guest

  • Greater readability in header of live shot object

    • Split up the RS’s and Phone Lines

    • Move hit time closer to name on left

    • “Ready-For-Air” checkbox needs to pop the most
